Finding a good devotional is hard these days. Most of what you find in Christian bookstores amounts to spiritual cotton-candy (maybe not the best metaphor… I really like cotton-candy!). The first devotional help I want to point you to is D. A. Carson’s For The Love Of God series (Vol. 1, and Vol. 2). In contrast with most popular devotionals of our day Carson’s is relatively rich in it’s theology, and does a great job at exposing the “big picture” of the Bible, and how your daily readings fit into the puzzle. The devotional readings follow along with the M’Cheyne Bible reading plan. The plan takes you through the OT once and the NT and Psalms twice in the year. The best part is that you can download both volumes as free pdfs! Here are the links: (Vol. 1) and (Vol. 2). The GoodReader app is a great way to read them on the iPhone or iPod Touch.
(If you have a iPhone or iPod touch, I recommend downloading the OliveTree Bible app as well, its not my favorite Bible app, but has a built-in feature for the M’Cheyne Bible reading plan.)
Another great volume that I have come across is Milton Vincent’s A Gospel Primer For Christians. I have really grown, and been encouraged by this work. It’s a simple book consisting of around one month’s worth of readings, followed by the Gospel in prose, and poem form. I highly recommend this book!
